Dugo Polje, Blidinje
Blidinje Nature Park · Central Dinarides · about 1,184–1,208 m
Dugo Polje offers the broadest balance in the portfolio: an open karst floor, strong elevation and a road-served park landscape between Vran and Čvrsnica. The score does not treat the lake shore, Risovac and the entire field as one uniform observing surface; local lamps, wind exposure and damp ground can change conditions over short distances.
- The planning marker sits on the Dugo Polje side of Blidinje Nature Park rather than on a summit route.
- Blidinje Lake lies at the bottom of the field at about 1,184 metres, where shallow water and cold-air pooling can raise dew and fog risk.
- The open field gives wider meteor and Milky Way sightlines than the forested approaches.
- Risovac and roadside facilities can create direct glare even when the wider landscape remains rural.
Planning caution: Verify the legal stopping place and park conditions before sunset. Avoid field tracks, wet ground and private parcels when moving away from local lighting.
Prijevor Ridge
Sutjeska National Park · Maglić sector · about 1,668 m
Prijevor is the strongest low-light ridge context in the set, but it is not scored as a summit destination. Its value comes from an elevated planning area below Maglić with broad mountain sectors and little nearby settlement lighting; the weaker access score reflects the need to confirm the approach, road condition and permitted night use.
- The ridge stands inside the Maglić–Volujak–Zelengora landscape of Sutjeska National Park.
- Open exposure can improve horizon reach while making tripods and telescopes more vulnerable to wind.
- Mountain cloud can develop differently from the forecast for Foča or other lower settlements.
- The marker is an approximate planning centre and does not identify a night parking bay or a safe off-road position.
Planning caution: Arrive before sunset, keep to confirmed roads and established visitor areas, and do not turn a mountain ascent into an unplanned night route.
Donje Bare
Sutjeska National Park · Zelengora · about 1,482 m
Donje Bare pairs very low settlement influence with a more enclosed lake-and-forest setting than Prijevor. It works best when the observation position is already known in daylight, because tree lines and nearby slopes can remove low sky sectors even while the zenith remains dark.
- Donje Bare is one of Zelengora’s named mountain lakes within Sutjeska National Park.
- Forest shelter can reduce some wind, yet it can also limit the east or west horizon from a poorly chosen clearing.
- Lake and meadow moisture raise the chance of dew on optics after a calm evening.
- The August–September darkness calculation averages 7.2605 hours across all 61 nights.
Planning caution: Use only a confirmed visitor approach and established open ground. A dark satellite image does not establish safe ground access around the lake or forest edge.
Livanjsko Polje
Canton 10 · Southwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina · about 703 m
Livanjsko Polje is the broad lowland-horizon test in the portfolio. Its scale opens more sky than the mountain-lake sites, but the Ramsar wetland setting means the darkest-looking part of the field is not automatically suitable for vehicles, tripods or night entry.
- The Ramsar site covers a large karst wetland system across the Livno field.
- A flat horizon is useful for meteor watching and wide-field photography.
- Cold air can settle on the polje floor, allowing fog or low haze to form while nearby slopes remain clearer.
- Livno and smaller settlements can produce low directional light domes rather than a uniform sky glow.
Planning caution: Stay on verified public roads and legal stopping areas. Wetland protection, agricultural use, drainage channels and private land rule out treating the field centre as an open driving area.
Glamočko Polje
Canton 10 · Western interior · about 924 m
Glamočko Polje provides a higher and less developed karst-field comparison to Livanjsko Polje. The field has strong horizon geometry, yet night-access documentation is thin, so the score holds access at 50 rather than converting remoteness into an assumed advantage.
- The planning centre lies on the Glamoč field at roughly 924 metres, surrounded by higher Dinaric terrain.
- Small settlement scale supports light escape, while the town of Glamoč still affects the nearest horizon sector.
- A calm clear forecast can still produce ground-level cooling and mist in the basin.
- No current dark-sky designation or public astronomy site was verified for the field during review.
Planning caution: Confirm a public roadside position locally and remain on known routes. Do not follow unmarked tracks simply because the field appears open on the map.
Lukomir
Bjelašnica plateau · Sarajevo Canton · about 1,459–1,500 m
Lukomir is a high inhabited plateau edge rather than a dark-core reserve. The village gives a clear test of how local house lighting, the Sarajevo-side sky and the Rakitnica canyon geometry interact within a short distance.
- The village is commonly described at roughly 1,500 metres on Bjelašnica.
- Open plateau sectors can support Milky Way compositions, while canyon edges and nearby ridges constrain low targets.
- Sarajevo’s regional light dome is more relevant here than at the Sutjeska sites.
- Village streets, homes and working land should not be treated as public observing space.
Planning caution: Plan the stopping point before dark, respect residents and private property, and avoid canyon-edge movement after sunset. Winter access cannot be inferred from summer road conditions.
Brus, Trebević
Trebević · Sarajevo city escape · about 1,141 m
Brus is the access-led control site. It is close enough to Sarajevo for a short observing session and benefits from organized astronomy activity in the city, but the urban light dome keeps it well below the remote Dinaric and karst locations for faint targets.
- Brus is a known Trebević recreation area reached from Sarajevo-side routes.
- The site is better matched to the Moon, planets, bright clusters and introductory telescope use than to faint nebulae.
- Sarajevo dominates the low western and northwestern sky from many Trebević viewpoints.
- Historical observatory material and Orion activity confirm astronomy context, but no claim is made that the old Čolina Kapa observatory is a currently operating walk-in facility.
Planning caution: Use a legal public stopping area, keep headlights away from other observers and check the return route. Do not enter closed buildings or observatory compounds.
Martin Brod
Una National Park · Upper Una valley · about 353 m
Martin Brod tests the remote-valley trade-off. Valley walls and forest can block direct settlement glare, but they also remove low sky, and the Una’s water environment raises moisture and dew risk compared with the high karst fields.
- Martin Brod is an official visitor area within Una National Park.
- The 2026 park price list identifies Entrance No. 5 for the Martin Brod waterfall area.
- The lowest elevation in the portfolio gives less exposure to ridge wind but more valley enclosure.
- A dark zenith does not compensate for blocked horizon sectors when a target stays low.
Planning caution: Waterfall paths, river edges and visitor infrastructure are not automatic night-observing sites. Verify park hours, gates and parking before making an evening plan.
Dinaric Height Does Not Set the Night by Itself
Prijevor, Donje Bare, Dugo Polje and Lukomir show four different versions of high ground.
Prijevor has the strongest ridge exposure and the widest mountain context, yet that same exposure increases wind and route risk. Donje Bare is almost as dark by the editorial light rubric but loses horizon sectors to forest and nearby slopes. Dugo Polje sits lower than both Sutjeska locations, though its open karst floor gives a more practical balance for wide-field work. Lukomir adds village lighting, private land and the Sarajevo-side glow to a high plateau setting.
Ridge Exposure Versus a Stable Setup
A telescope or long-lens camera needs more than altitude. Gusts can shake a mount, a cloud cap can form over the ridge while lower fields remain open, and a broad view is of little use if the return road is uncertain. A slightly lower legal roadside position can outperform a higher shoulder when it provides shelter, a known route and a clear target direction.

Livanjsko, Glamočko and Dugo Polje After Sunset
An open polje can gain sky coverage while losing transparency near the ground.
Karst fields look simple on a map because the central floor is broad and relatively level. Night conditions are less uniform. Cold air can collect in the basin, waterlogged or wetland sectors can feed fog, and distant settlement lights can remain visible along a low horizon. A modestly raised public road on the field edge may preserve the wide sky while avoiding the coldest air, but only where stopping is legal and the ground has been checked in daylight.
Polje Floor
Maximum sky width, strongest cold-air pooling and the greatest chance of wet or unsuitable ground.
Raised Field Edge
Often a better balance of horizon and air drainage, provided the road, shoulder and land status are clear.
Mountain Rim
Less basin fog is possible, but ridges can block targets and wind can rise quickly.

Martin Brod Can Hide Glare and Hide the Sky
The upper Una valley is a different observing problem from the high fields.
Martin Brod’s valley walls and forest can screen direct lamps that would remain visible across an open polje. That shelter does not create an open horizon. Targets near the skyline may disappear behind ridges, and river moisture can soften transparency or coat optics with dew before the higher sites show the same problem.

Trebević Measures the Cost of Staying Close to Sarajevo
Brus trades faint-sky performance for a clearer public recreation context and a shorter return route.
Brus scores 85 for access clarity and 70 for astronomy support, the highest values in those two factors. Its overall score remains 62 because the Sarajevo light dome is the strongest artificial-light constraint in the portfolio. This makes Trebević useful for the Moon, planets, bright double stars and public telescope sessions, while the remote locations remain better candidates for faint nebulae and broad Milky Way contrast.
The documented history of the Čolina Kapa observatory and the work of Astronomical Society Orion establish an astronomy context around Sarajevo. A Darker Track Is Not a Valid Route Decision
Night-sky planning in Bosnia and Herzegovina must separate low light from verified ground access.
The revised Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Strategy records 838 square kilometres of suspected hazardous area at the end of 2023. The figure is not a location-by-location warning for every marker, and it cannot be used to judge a specific road. It does show why an unmarked field edge, forest track or darker foreground should never be treated as open ground without current local confirmation.
Remain on verified roads, established visitor areas and confirmed marked routes. Do not leave a known approach to search for a darker foreground. Satellite darkness, an open field or an unmarked track does not establish that the ground is safe, public or legal to enter.
Before Sunset
Identify the legal stopping place, surface condition, gate position and return junctions in daylight.
Park and Land Status
Confirm protected-area hours, private land, wetland restrictions and any seasonal road limits.
Night Return
Check wind, fog, snow, mobile signal and fuel before the outward drive, not after equipment is set up.
