Stargazing in Egypt is shaped by one dominant choice: leave the Cairo–Nile light corridor for the Western Desert, high Sinai, the far south or the Red Sea coast. The shared assessment window is September–October, when all eight markers average more than nine hours of full astronomical darkness and the desert heat is easing. The score covers a selected portfolio of eight planning areas, not every part of the country and not a live forecast.

This transparent editorial suitability index compares the selected location portfolio through disclosed darkness, cloud, atmospheric, horizon, access and astronomy-support evidence. It is not an official sky classification, a live forecast or a guarantee of access.
Egypt’s score is driven by strong desert light escape, frequent clear-weather potential and more than nine hours of full astronomical darkness throughout the shared window. Access uncertainty, mixed evidence periods and the absence of a verified current dark-sky designation keep the result in Comparability Quality C.
Method: Mixed direct and categorical evidence. Kottamia uses a published V-band zenith sky-brightness value; the other seven locations use Official Categorical Evidence under the fixed light-escape rubric. No Bortle class or VIIRS radiance is asserted.

Source Mapping: White Desert receives the darkest categorical score because the official protected-area material places it in the Farafra desert landscape with sparse settlement. Siwa, Saint Catherine, Wadi Al-Hitan and Wadi El Gemal retain distant or local light sectors. Dakhla and Abu Simbel include inhabited strips. Kottamia uses the direct published measurement rather than the categorical score.

White Desert Protected Area
Farafra, New Valley Governorate
A chalk-limestone desert north of Farafra forms Egypt’s strongest low-light entry in this portfolio. Broad open ground, sparse settlement and sculpted formations support wide-field observing, while protected-area status makes a local operator and a confirmed night plan more important than an improvised roadside stop.

- Open desert sectors provide broad horizons; chalk stacks can also create controlled foregrounds.
- Farafra is the service base, so fuel, water and the return route need arranging before departure.

Saint Catherine Highlands
South Sinai highlands
High Sinai changes the observing problem from flat-desert horizon hunting to ridge selection. Elevation and dry air are helpful, yet granite walls can close parts of the sky and the monastery, town, trails and protected land each have separate rules.
- The planning center sits near Saint Catherine town at roughly the 1,500–1,700 m highland band.
- Ridges can block low-altitude targets, so the intended azimuth matters more than elevation alone.
- Town lighting is local rather than regional, but a dark foreground requires moving beyond built-up streets.

Main trade-off: strong highland transparency potential with sector-limited horizons. Check road, trail, monastery and protectorate rules, and return before using any unlit mountain track.
Siwa Oasis Desert Edge
Matrouh Governorate, Great Sand Sea margin
Siwa works best as an oasis-edge escape rather than an observing session inside the palm belt. The town provides lodging and road access; the darker decision is how far to move toward the Great Sand Sea without treating dunes, salt lakes or border-zone tracks as unrestricted night ground.
- The marker represents the inhabited-oasis edge, not a dune-driving route or a fixed camp.
- Siwa sits near sea level, so darkness comes from distance from major cities rather than altitude.
- Palm groves and local settlement lights narrow some horizon sectors close to town.

Main trade-off: practical lodging beside a large low-light desert, with lower atmospheric advantage than Egypt’s highlands. Use an established local route and confirm any permit or border-area restriction.
Wadi Al-Hitan
Wadi El Rayan Protected Area, Faiyum
Whale Valley offers a fossil basin and open Western Desert sky closer to Cairo than the oasis circuit. That proximity improves trip length but increases the need to choose a legal protected-area plan and to account for the Cairo–Faiyum glow on the northeastern horizon.
- UNESCO lists Wadi Al-Hitan inside the Western Desert fossil landscape of Faiyum.
- Open basin views are useful for wide-field work; local escarpments can shape low horizons.
- The route is remote enough that gate status, fuel and the return drive should be settled before sunset.

Al-Dakhla Oasis
New Valley Governorate
Dakhla is a chain of settlements rather than one isolated point, so the practical choice is an oasis-edge road with a clear return path. Dry southern air and long distance from Cairo help, while palms, village lights and the escarpment make the exact horizon depend on which side of the cultivated strip is used.
- The marker is centered near Al-Qasr and the northern Dakhla settlement belt.
- Ancient villages, temples and necropolises are visitor sites, not automatic night-observing grounds.
- The Western Desert highway gives a clearer access pattern than deep-dune travel.

Main trade-off: high clear-sky and dry-air potential with a mixed rural light field. Move beyond village lighting only on a known road, and do not enter archaeological compounds after hours.
Wadi El Gemal National Park
Red Sea Governorate
This Red Sea park provides the portfolio’s cleanest sea-horizon geometry. The eastern sky opens over water while desert mountains rise inland, creating a useful split between low eastern targets and a more obstructed western sector.
- EEAA describes a park extending across a long Red Sea coastline and inland desert mountains.
- Coastal humidity and marine haze lower the transparency score despite frequent dry weather.
- Dust crossing the Red Sea can reduce contrast even when cloud cover is limited.

Main trade-off: an open eastern horizon with weaker moisture control than inland desert sites. Confirm park entry, coastal road status and a legal stopping point; do not block service or beach tracks.
Abu Simbel and Lake Nasser
Aswan Governorate
Abu Simbel combines a far-southern desert latitude with a broad Lake Nasser horizon and a small urban light field. The temples are the cultural anchor, but the score applies to a legal town-or-lakeside planning area, not to the monument precinct after visitor hours.
- The UNESCO property contains the temples of Ramses II and other Nubian monuments.
- The lake opens low sectors while town, airport and heritage lighting remain local constraints.
- Southern latitude produces the longest average full darkness in this eight-location set.

Main trade-off: excellent clear-sky reliability and southern-sky reach with moderate local light. Use public roads and a confirmed legal viewpoint; temple grounds are not an independent night-access site.
Kottamia Astronomical Observatory
Cairo–Suez desert corridor
Kottamia is the portfolio’s facility-led option. It offers a documented 450 m observatory hill, a major research telescope and an official visit-reservation route, but it sits within reach of Cairo, Suez and Ain Sokhna light domes, so it does not compete with the Western Desert on darkness.
- NRIAG operates the 1.88 m Kottamia telescope on a hill reported at about 450 m elevation.
- Visits require advance reservation through the institute’s official contact channel.
- The research compound is not a general-purpose roadside observing site.

Main trade-off: the strongest verified astronomy support and clearest booked-access path, paired with the weakest artificial-light escape in the set. Do not enter the compound without an arranged visit.

Escaping Cairo and the Nile Light Corridor
West toward Farafra and Siwa: White Desert and Siwa place the largest distance between the observer and the Cairo–Delta urban field. White Desert ranks higher because its planning center is farther from an inhabited oasis core, while Siwa trades some darkness for lodging and easier resupply.
South through the New Valley and Lake Nasser: Dakhla and Abu Simbel avoid Cairo’s direct dome but retain local settlement, road, airport or heritage lighting. Their advantage is dry southern air and a long clear-weather season rather than a claim of zero artificial light.
East toward Kottamia and the Red Sea: Kottamia is the shortest facility-led escape from Cairo but remains within the Cairo–Suez–Ain Sokhna development corridor. Wadi El Gemal is much darker, though coastal moisture and dust can reduce contrast.
These directional light-dome notes are geographic planning judgments under the disclosed rubric. They are not point VIIRS radiance, SQM readings or Bortle assignments.
Western Desert Nights: Oases, Protected Areas and Return Routes
Farafra, Siwa and Dakhla are service bases, but the darkest ground lies outside their lit settlement cores. Egypt’s official tourism material notes that desert excursions around Farafra are commonly arranged through a hotel or travel agency, and the protected-area documents for White Desert and Siwa confirm that these are managed landscapes rather than empty land without rules.
White Desert and Wadi Al-Hitan: arrive before sunset, confirm gates or guide arrangements, carry enough fuel and water, and settle the return route before mobile coverage becomes uncertain. A marker on the map is not a campsite authorization.
Siwa and Dakhla: use known oasis roads and a local operator for dune or border-adjacent travel. Palm belts, salt lakes, archaeological compounds and cultivated strips each create different access and horizon limits.
Red Sea East Horizons and Sinai Ridge Walls
Wadi El Gemal and Saint Catherine solve opposite horizon problems. Wadi El Gemal opens the east over the Red Sea, making it the strongest choice in this set for low eastern targets, moonrise sequences and wide coastal compositions. The inland western sky is shaped by the Red Sea Mountains, and marine haze can soften low-altitude contrast.
Saint Catherine offers much higher terrain and drier air, but the granite highlands close parts of the horizon. A target rising behind a ridge can lose an hour or more of useful altitude even on a clear night. Plan by azimuth, not by elevation alone, and verify protected-area, trail and road rules before choosing a highland turnout.
Dust can cross both the Eastern Desert and the Red Sea while the sky remains nearly cloud-free. A low cloud forecast does not replace an aerosol, wind and visibility check.
Ancient Landscapes Without Treating Monuments as Night Access
Wadi Al-Hitan: the fossil basin supplies a rare geological foreground, but UNESCO status does not imply unrestricted after-hours use. Confirm the protected-area schedule and keep vehicles on permitted routes.
Abu Simbel: the temples define the landscape, yet the score belongs to a legal town-or-lakeside planning area. Monument precincts, visitor hours and security controls remain separate from independent stargazing.
Dakhla: Al-Qasr, temples and necropolises can guide daytime location scouting. Night work should use a confirmed public road or booked property rather than an archaeological enclosure.
Ancient architecture can be an observing context without becoming the observing site. Use legal parking, avoid white headlights near other observers, do not enter closed compounds and leave service roads clear.
