The island-and-mainland mix is strongest in artificial-light escape, clear-season reliability and elevated horizons, while legal night access and astronomy-specific support vary sharply between public dark-sky programming, research observatories, trails and ordinary protected landscapes. The same seven weighted factors are used for every location and the country result is an editorial planning index, not an official sky class, a live forecast or a promise that a road, trail or facility is open.

Skinakas Observatory

Aenos is the one location in this portfolio where a formal DarkSky International designation changes the planning evidence directly. The park’s 2023 International Dark Sky Park status is paired with monitored darkness, lighting-improvement work and public astronomy programming, so its 100/100 support score is based on astronomy-specific evidence rather than on generic protected-area status.
The forest matters. DarkSky International notes that nearby-island light is mainly a low-horizon effect visible through breaks in the trees and from higher vantage points, while the interior routinely records exceptional darkness. That creates a practical split: the darkest interior position is not automatically the best wide-horizon photography position. Aenos works best when the observing target and the needed horizon are chosen before the exact public site.
Aegean Wind and Western Moisture Pull Plans in Different Directions
Crete and the Cyclades
HNMS places August–September inside Greece’s warm, rainless season, when the weather is generally stable and skies are often clear. In the Aegean, recurring northerly Etesian winds are part of that pattern. For Skinakas, Naxos and Anafi, this supports strong clear-sky scores but does not mean calm conditions: exposed tripods, dust under occasional southerly flow on Crete, and wind-sensitive coastal or ridge work remain separate constraints.
Ionian Greece, Epirus and Prespa
HNMS describes western and northern Greece as wetter than the dry east. Aenos still benefits from a strong late-summer window, but the Ionian setting is given a lower clear-sky baseline than Crete or the southeastern Peloponnese. Vradeto–Beloi and Prespa also lose points to northern/western cloud exposure, with Prespa carrying an additional lake-basin moisture penalty in the transparency factor.
This climate split is why a single Greece-wide cloud percentage would be misleading. The score keeps one seasonal window but lets regional evidence change the factor values.

Research Domes and Public Night Access Are Separate Decisions
Skinakas
Skinakas combines strong scientific observing conditions with recurring public open days. The public format uses portable telescopes outside the domes, while the official visitor information warns that the summit road is narrow and parking is limited. That supports a useful but conditional 70/100 access score.
Helmos
Helmos is valuable because the observatory itself documents the site’s darkness and 2,340 m elevation. It is not treated as a casual public observing ground. The access score is only 25/100 because a research compound and a legal independent stargazing position are different things; nearby public road or mountain access must be planned separately.
Aenos
Aenos is closer to a visitor-facing night-sky model: DarkSky International documents free public astronomy nights and notes that some sites require advance booking. Its access score therefore rises to 85/100 without implying that every forest track or clearing is open at night.
The Return Leg Changes More Greek Plans Than the Marker Does
Anafi is the clearest ferry-dependent case in the portfolio: the island can be a strong light-pollution escape, yet a late session still has to fit the island’s transport and footpath reality. On Naxos, Mount Zas offers 1,004 m of elevation but is a hiking environment rather than a designated night pull-off. Neither island receives extra access points simply because its sky setting is favorable.
Mountain roads create a different constraint. Skinakas has a paved but winding summit road; Helmos has a high research-site access regime; Prionia reaches about 1,100 m by road but sits inside an Olympus system known for sudden fog, storms and strong winds. Cape Tainaron reverses the problem: the road reaches the trail start, then the lighthouse route continues on foot for about 40–50 minutes across an exposed headland. A useful stargazing plan has to work in both directions, not just on arrival.
Access rule for the map: a marker can identify a planning zone without certifying a gate, trail, road shoulder, observatory compound or parking place. Current authority information remains part of the final go/no-go decision.
