September and October form the shared observing window used for this eight-location portfolio, balancing full astronomical darkness with practical autumn access. This transparent editorial suitability index compares the selected location portfolio through disclosed darkness, cloud, atmospheric, horizon, access and astronomy-support evidence. It is not an official sky classification, a live forecast or a guarantee of access.
Luxembourg’s strongest result comes from the protected and monitored night environment at Putscheid. The national portfolio loses points through changeable autumn cloud, moisture in enclosed valleys and the lack of verified night-observing facilities at most rural viewpoints.
Method: Direct SQM evidence for Putscheid and disclosed categorical scoring for the other seven locations. The reported Putscheid zenith value of about 21.2 mag/arcsec² converts to 82.2 using the fixed SQM normalization. No Bortle conversion was made.

Putscheid is the only portfolio location with a current DarkSky International designation and published sky-brightness monitoring. The municipality reports rural plateau villages above the Our Valley, while DarkSky records zenith readings around 21.2 mag/arcsec² on clear moonless nights.

Luxembourg’s highest surveyed point sits close to Wilwerdange and the Belgian border. Its height and agricultural plateau setting provide a broader sky than the wooded valleys farther south, though the summit is not a designated astronomy site.

- Northern position limits direct exposure to Luxembourg City’s light dome.
- Exposed terrain can increase wind and low-cloud risk.
- Nearby agricultural and minor-road access requires careful stopping choices.
Main trade-off: Strong horizon potential comes with exposure. Check wind, fog, road edges and farm access before setting up equipment.
Napoléonsgaart

Napoléonsgaart is a western high point reached from the Rambrouch countryside. It has stronger horizon potential than Luxembourg’s enclosed river valleys, while remaining closer to regional roads and settlements than the far north.
Site constraint: The summit contains a water tower and transmission structures. Choose a lawful open sector away from buildings, entrances and service access rather than treating the summit marker as a parking instruction.

- Western position reduces direct influence from the capital.
- Open agricultural foregrounds suit wide-angle sky photography.
- Local structures can interrupt part of the horizon.
Kiischpelt Solar Circle

The marker occupies the exact intersection of 50° north and 6° east. A signed Sun Trail leads from Enscherange to the circle, giving the location a clearer astronomy identity than most rural Luxembourg viewpoints.

Belvédère Burfelt

The Burfelt route moves from a high-plateau parking area through forest and open orchard country before descending toward the Upper Sûre reservoir. The viewpoint gives a strong foreground for star trails, but the lake and enclosed slopes raise dew and fog risk.
Access limit: The platform cannot be reached directly by car and the official nature centre has daytime opening hours. A public daytime route does not automatically confirm unrestricted night use.

Rindschleiden

Rindschleiden occupies a quiet high-plateau hollow surrounded by fields, orchard trees and a small forest. The village-centre approach is simpler than the walk-in viewpoints, but nearby buildings and vegetation mean the best horizon may lie outside the compact centre.

- Western position offers a useful escape from Luxembourg City.

Gringlee Viewpoint

Gringlee sits high above a bend of the Sûre and Bourscheid Castle. The open valley-facing sector is useful for landscape astrophotography, while forest and ridge geometry limit the opposite side of the sky.
Restriction-led decision: Gringlee cannot be reached by car. Night use requires a planned walk, a known return route, suitable footwear and confirmation that the selected trail remains open.

- Strong view toward the Sûre meanders and castle.
- Woodland creates a directional rather than full-circle horizon.

Cornelysmillen Wetland

Cornelysmillen has one of the portfolio’s better light-escape settings, with meadows, hedges, ponds and streams between Troisvierges, Basbellain and Wilwerdange. Its score is reduced by moisture, restricted horizons and the practical demands of a wetland trail after dark.
Primary constraint: Fog, dew, wet wooden walkways and wildlife sensitivity matter more here than elevation. Remain on the marked route and avoid white lights near observation habitats.

Putscheid’s 01:00–04:30 Lighting Switch-Off
The community’s lighting controls alter the timing decision as well as the location decision.
Before 01:00
Municipal and road lighting may still influence nearby village horizons. Use this part of the night for arrival, equipment checks and framing rather than assuming the darkest local conditions begin immediately after astronomical twilight.
During the Switch-Off Period
DarkSky International reports a municipal switch-off between 01:00 and 04:30 alongside adaptive dimming and warm-colour luminaires. The measured benefit will vary with the observer’s distance from villages, private lighting, traffic and the direction of view.
The Dark Sky Community status does not make every roadside verge an observing place. Select legal parking before dark, avoid residential streets and keep lamps warm, dim and downward-directed.

Locations only a few kilometres apart can behave differently after sunset because cold air and moisture collect in low terrain.
Open Ardennes Plateaus
Putscheid, Kneiff and Napoléonsgaart offer the broadest horizons and the least local moisture trapping. Their weakness is exposure: wind, fast-moving low cloud and colder apparent temperatures can interrupt telescope work.
Upper Sûre Reservoir Air
Burfelt can provide a dark rural foreground, but cooling above the reservoir may increase dew and low fog. Carry lens heaters or dew control and check whether the viewpoint remains visible from the legal access route before committing to a long exposure.
Cornelysmillen Cold-Pool Risk
Ponds, streams, meadows and enclosed ground make Cornelysmillen the portfolio’s most moisture-sensitive choice. A clear forecast for Troisvierges does not rule out shallow local fog along the wetland boardwalks.
Southern Horizons Toward Diekirch, Ettelbruck and Luxembourg City
The northern portfolio escapes the capital’s core glow, but the southern sky still requires directional planning.
Milky Way Photography
During early September, the brighter Milky Way region occupies the southern to south-western part of the evening sky. At northern locations, test this sector for combined glow from Diekirch, Ettelbruck and the larger settlement corridor toward Luxembourg City. This is a directional planning inference, not a measured dome boundary.
Northern and Zenith Targets
High northern targets and zenith work often avoid the strongest settlement direction. Kneiff and Cornelysmillen sit closest to the northern border, while Putscheid adds the clearest verified lighting controls. Trees and ridges still determine which telescope fields remain usable.
Review a current cloud forecast, Moon position and satellite imagery before departure. The suitability score uses long-term and categorical evidence, not tonight’s cloud, transparency or local fog.
