June–July is the preferred observing window for this ten-location portfolio, pairing long astronomical darkness with Namibia’s winter dry season. The locations range from the certified darkness of NamibRand and telescope-focused guest farms to national-park camps, Fish River Canyon, Etosha and a deliberately weather-sensitive Skeleton Coast option.

Tivoli Southern Sky Guest Farm

- The farm sits on flat Kalahari terrain, creating a broad low horizon without mountain walls.

Hakos Astro Guest Farm

Spitzkoppe Rest Camp

Naukluft Camp

Hobas Lodge

- Hobas is the NWR lodge and campsite near the northern end of Fish River Canyon.
- Its 27.6° south latitude gives the portfolio’s longest average astronomical darkness during the June–July calculation window.
- The dry southern interior is far from Namibia’s main urban light corridor.
Main trade-off: Canyon viewpoints, hiking routes and park roads can have separate access rules. Keep night observing within currently permitted lodge or campsite areas.
Okaukuejo Resort
Etosha National Park · 1,110 m
- Okaukuejo is NWR’s most accessible Etosha resort from Windhoek and lies near the park’s southern entrance.
- Rooms, campsites, a shop and a filling station simplify logistics compared with the remote desert entries.
- The famous waterhole is floodlit at night, creating a local artificial-light penalty despite Etosha’s remote regional setting.
Main trade-off: Wildlife, resort lighting and park rules take priority over astronomy. Do not leave permitted areas after dark in search of a darker foreground.
Terrace Bay Resort
Skeleton Coast · 24 m
- Terrace Bay is an NWR resort on the Skeleton Coast beside the Atlantic and northern Namib dunes.
- The site is remote from major urban light, so artificial-light escape can be strong when the atmosphere cooperates.
- Namibia’s tourism authority notes that coastal fog is common under the cold Benguela Current.
Main trade-off: This is the portfolio’s weather-sensitive option. A moonless night can still be unusable because of fog or low cloud, so check local conditions before committing to the coast.
The Benguela Fog Line Changes the Decision
Terrace Bay is remote from major city light, yet darkness alone does not make it one of Namibia’s strongest observing bases. The cold Benguela Current keeps the coast cool and makes fog common. Visit Namibia notes that coastal fog often lifts in midmorning and settles again during late afternoon, exactly when an evening observing plan begins.
For a route following the Skeleton Coast, treat the coast as a conditional sky choice rather than an automatic dark-sky win.
Spitzkoppe already sits farther from the immediate maritime strip and scores better for clear-sky reliability. NamibRand, Sossus and the Khomas sites gain more through the dry interior pattern. The distinction is atmospheric, not merely distance from a city.
The seasonal score is a planning baseline. Coastal fog can change from one night to the next.
Khomas Highlands: Hakos for Guests, H.E.S.S. for Context
Hakos and H.E.S.S. occupy the same broad highland astronomy zone but serve very different observers. Hakos is an astro guest-farm environment at 1,852 m with IAS telescopes and observing infrastructure. It becomes a practical telescope base when accommodation and facility use are arranged in advance.
H.E.S.S., at 1,800 m about 100 km southwest of Windhoek, is a professional gamma-ray observatory. Its terrain supplies useful evidence for the region’s astronomy conditions, but access is restricted. The 25/100 access factor prevents the prestige of a research facility from becoming a misleading independent-observing recommendation.
Namib-Naukluft: Sossus and Naukluft Solve Different Night Problems
Sossus Dune Lodge and Naukluft Camp belong to the same large national-park system but have different observing roles. NWR states that Sossus Dune Lodge guests can reach Sossusvlei before sunrise and remain after sunset, a useful distinction where ordinary gate timing can cut into twilight and early-night photography.
Naukluft Camp is the mountain alternative. Campsites and steep terrain replace the broad dune basin. It scores lower on horizon quality because ridges can remove low sky sectors, yet it provides a managed overnight base far from Namibia’s main towns. Neither score authorizes stopping wherever desired on national-park roads after dark.
Etosha’s Dark Region Has a Bright Local Exception
Okaukuejo shows why regional remoteness does not automatically equal a dark observing site. Etosha is far from a large city and its terrain is open, but Okaukuejo’s signature wildlife waterhole is intentionally floodlit through the night. The location therefore loses points for artificial-light escape.
Its advantage is logistics: managed accommodation, camping, fuel and organized activities sit in one place. The astronomy compromise is local light, and driving into the park after dark simply to find a darker patch is not an observing strategy.
