Yeongyang Firefly Eco Park
Yeongyang, North Gyeongsang · about 306 m at the observatory planning center
- DarkSky International lists the 3.63 km² park as an International Dark Sky Park designated in 2015.
- The planning center lies in the Wangpi River valley, where surrounding mountains suppress some low-angle settlement light but also narrow parts of the horizon.
- The park combines an astronomy education facility with a protected ecological landscape and firefly habitat.

Bohyunsan Astronomical Science Museum
Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang · mountain facility below the 1,121 m Bohyeonsan summit
- The public science museum sits on Bohyeonsan and operates an observation room, planetarium and exhibition spaces.

Yeongwol, Gangwon · 799.8 m on Bongnaesan Mountain
- Byeolmaro is a public observatory on Bongnaesan Mountain at 799.8 m, above Yeongwol’s valley floor.
- Its summit setting gives the strongest horizon score in the eight-location portfolio.
- Advance reservation is required; the published autumn schedule runs to 22:00 from October and parking is available.
- The latitude produces about 9.23 hours of full astronomical darkness per night across September and October 2026.
Planning trade-off: The paved summit approach is winding and closure can occur for site conditions. Reach the mountain before dark, confirm the reservation, and plan the descent without using high beams near observers.
Deogyusan National Park
Muju, Jeonbuk · mountain park below the 1,614 m Hyangjeokbong summit
- The national park spans a high mountain system whose summit reaches 1,614 m.
- Official visitor information lists the park as open 24 hours and identifies Samgong, Jeoksang and Pahoe parking areas.
- Independent observing should remain at legal public parking or booked camping areas rather than on restricted trails or roadsides.

Maisan Provincial Park

Saetbyeol Beach

Nari Basin

- Published October–March hours run from 14:00 to 22:00, with parking available.
- Its hilltop is practical for a structured evening, but the official description also notes the visible downtown city lights.
- Jeju’s lower latitude gives the portfolio’s longest target-window darkness average, about 9.34 hours per night.
Planning trade-off: This is an access-led astronomy stop rather than a remote dark-sky core. City glow and maritime moisture limit faint-object contrast; use the facility program and check weather before travel.

South Korea’s urban network makes direction of travel as important as straight-line distance.

From Seoul: use the Gangwon interior
Byeolmaro is the portfolio’s clearest structured escape from the capital region because Bongnaesan rises above Yeongwol and the observatory publishes reservation, parking and evening-hour information. The road gains altitude quickly; arrival before sunset is more useful than trying to find an unverified roadside pull-off after dark.
From Daegu: move toward Bohyunsan or Yeongyang
Bohyunsan offers booked telescope access, while Yeongyang provides the stronger protected dark-sky context. Daegu’s glow is more relevant on western and southwestern horizons; the rural mountain terrain reduces direct light but does not remove cloud, valley fog or local facility lighting.
On Jeju: facility access does not equal dark isolation
Jeju Starlight World Park is practical and astronomy-focused, yet the official description explicitly places downtown lights in the view. It works for a scheduled public session and bright targets; faint Milky Way structure demands a darker legal coastal or upland site than the city-edge marker used here.
Taebaek–Sobaek Mountain Roads After Dark
Yeongyang and Yeongwol reward early arrival
The east-central portfolio sites sit in valleys or on summits reached by winding local roads. Yeongyang’s Wangpi River setting protects darkness but narrows the horizon, while Byeolmaro’s summit solves the horizon problem at the cost of a steeper night drive. Fuel, mobile signal and return routing should be settled before the session begins.
Deogyusan’s 24-hour listing is not a blanket trail permit
The visitor record names Samgong, Jeoksang and Pahoe parking areas and lists the park as open all day. Mountain trails, seasonal closures, wildlife controls and service roads can still have separate rules. Keep the observing setup in a legal public or booked area, then check Korea National Park Service notices on the travel date.
Ulleungdo and Jeju Do Not Share the Same Island Sky
Nari Basin: strong light escape, weak low horizon
Ulleungdo’s offshore position separates Nari Basin from mainland city corridors, which lifts its Artificial-Light Escape score. The caldera geometry works against low-altitude targets, and moist East Sea air can fill the basin with cloud even when a mainland forecast looks favorable. Ferry and road reliability belong in the observing decision, not only the sky forecast.
Jeju combines maritime moisture with a city dome
Jeju Starlight World Park has the portfolio’s longest calculated astronomical darkness because of its lower latitude, but darkness duration cannot cancel artificial light or humidity. Telescope programs can still be productive for the Moon, planets, double stars and bright clusters when transparency is too weak for low-contrast wide-field work.
What the September–October Window Favors Over Korea
Early autumn Milky Way work
In September, the brighter summer Milky Way remains available after evening twilight, especially from low-light eastern sites. Its core sits lower and sets earlier as the window advances, so a clear southern to southwestern sector matters more than total horizon openness.
Later-night galaxies and clusters
Andromeda rises high during autumn evenings, while Cassiopeia, Perseus and the Double Cluster favor northern and northeastern views. Yeongyang’s valley walls may cut low targets, but they matter less once these objects climb well above the terrain.
Use the forecast in the right order
Check legal access first, then cloud, humidity and wind, followed by moonlight and target direction. A moonless night is not useful when the island is under marine cloud or a mountain road is closed; a bright Moon can still support public telescope sessions and landscape work.
