Stargazing in Saudi Arabia is shaped by three very different observing environments: the dark protected deserts of AlUla and Hail, the vast Empty Quarter, and high western mountains where elevation can be offset by cloud, fog or winter road risk. The strongest escape pattern runs away from Riyadh, Jeddah, Madinah and Abha toward remote sand seas, volcanic plateaus and designated dark-sky territory. The shared scoring window is November–December 2026, and the index compares eight planning regions rather than the country’s entire land area.

AlUla Manara

- A 2025 ERA5-based study reported low cold-season water vapour, a high share of clear nighttime hours and mild wind regimes.
- The plateau geometry supports broad sky coverage and a low local horizon.
- Independent visitor access to scientific infrastructure should not be assumed.

AlNufud Dark Sky Park
AlNufud AlKabir, Hail Province · roughly 800–1,000 m desert basin and dune country
- DarkSky International designated the 13,416 km² park in 2025.
- The place record states that nighttime visits are possible through organized trips or independent camping with an instant permit from the managing authority.
- Large dune fields provide broad horizons away from Hail city lights.
- Windblown sand can affect optics, vehicles and route visibility.
Planning limit: A permit does not replace route planning. Use a capable vehicle, record the exit route and avoid driving across unverified dune corridors after dark.
‘Uruq Bani Ma’arid
Western Rub al-Khali, Najran Province · dune corridors and plateau margins; dunes locally rise far above surrounding flats
- The protected area occupies the western edge of the Empty Quarter and is a UNESCO natural World Heritage property.
- Its sand sea, limestone plateau and wide corridors create very open southern and eastern horizons.
- The reserve is managed for wildlife protection, so entry routes and camping rules are not equivalent to open public desert.
- Mobile coverage, recovery time and fuel range can become the main planning limits.

Harrat Khaybar
Volcanic field north of Madinah · central volcanic uplands near 1,500–2,000 m
- The volcanic field extends across more than 14,000 km² and contains dark basalt flows, cones and pale volcanic domes.
- High, dry terrain can lift an observing setup above some low-level haze.
- Basalt tracks, lava edges and archaeological zones make exact stopping points a route-specific decision.
- Khaybar lies well outside the strongest Madinah light dome, though settlement glow may remain on one horizon.
Planning limit: Arrive before sunset, remain on legal roads and avoid archaeological or geological protection zones without local authorization.
Jabal Al-Lawz
Tabuk Province, Midian Mountains · 2,549 m summit zone
- Saudipedia records Jabal Al-Lawz at 2,549 m in the northwestern Midian Mountains.
- Elevation and dry interior air can improve transparency when the summit area is clear.
- Winter cloud, wind, frost and occasional snow can cancel an otherwise strong night.
- The most useful observing area may be a legal lower road shoulder or open plateau rather than the summit itself.
Planning limit: Check Tabuk weather and road status on the day of travel. Mountain access after rain, frost or snow should not be inferred from a map pin.
Edge of the World
Tuwaiq Escarpment northwest of Riyadh · about 1,100 m escarpment top
- The Tuwaiq cliff provides a long western horizon and a recognizable foreground for wide-angle night photography.
- Distance from central Riyadh reduces overhead skyglow, but the capital remains a strong southeastern light dome.
- Popular access routes can change with gates, track condition and local controls.
- Cliff edges and unlit tracks make daylight arrival especially useful.
Planning limit: Verify current access through a local operator or authority, use legal parking and stay well back from cliff edges after dark.
Al Soudah
Aseer highlands west of Abha · about 3,015 m mountain park zone
- Al Soudah reaches roughly 3,015 m and has paved access, viewpoints and park facilities near Abha.
- The high ridge can open views toward the Tihama plain, but trees and local terrain block parts of the sky.
- Abha records Saudi Arabia’s highest rainfall and elevated winter humidity, so cloud and fog are real limits.
- Nearby development and Abha’s light dome weaken the darkest low-altitude horizons.
Planning limit: Use a forecast that includes cloud base, fog and wind rather than relying on elevation alone. Confirm park and construction access before a night visit.
The Hail–AlUla Dark-Sky Corridor
AlUla’s certified cluster
AlGharameel and Manara were certified in 2024; Sharaan and Wadi Nakhlah joined the AlUla Dark Sky Parks in 2025. That makes northwest AlUla the country’s clearest concentration of monitored night-sky protection, guided astronomy and observatory development. Gharameel is the practical visitor choice. Manara scores almost as highly on sky conditions but remains an access-sensitive scientific context.
AlNufud’s permit pattern
AlNufud offers a different model: a very large Hail desert park where DarkSky International states that organized trips and permitted independent camping are available. The sky portfolio is strong, yet navigation, windblown sand and long recovery distances matter more than at a guided AlUla experience.
A dark-sky designation does not turn every track into a legal observing site. Use the managing authority’s current access process and keep light use low around other campers and observers.
Why the Empty Quarter Is Not a Roadside Stop
'Uruq Bani Ma'arid has the portfolio’s darkest and most open southern desert geometry, but its low access score is deliberate. UNESCO status, wildlife management and extreme remoteness make independent arrival a legal and logistical question, not merely a driving-distance question.
Authorized entry
Use an authorized operator, reserve arrangement or clearly permitted route. A map coordinate marks the protected property, not an entrance gate.
Recovery margin
Fuel range, two-way communication, water, tyre recovery and a daylight exit plan should be settled before astronomy equipment is packed.
Wildlife priority
Low-noise observing and controlled lighting are especially important in a reserve used for Arabian oryx and gazelle restoration.
Red Sea Escarpment: Height Does Not Always Mean Clearer Sky

Al Soudah is higher, but height alone does not erase moist Red Sea air, juniper cover or Abha’s light dome. Jabal Al-Lawz is the stronger astronomical bet in this portfolio, while also carrying the sharper winter road risk.
Tuwaiq and the Riyadh Light Dome
Use the western horizon
At Edge of the World, the escarpment opens toward the desert and gives a strong sunset-to-night transition. Wide-angle Milky Way or constellation photography should be framed away from the southeastern Riyadh glow when the season and sky orientation permit.
Resolve access before dark
Track and gate information has varied over time. Arrive before sunset, confirm the route locally, stay on legal parking areas and avoid approaching cliff edges after nightfall.
